Pure wool · Kullu valley, Himachal Pradesh
Warmth, woven
in the Himalaya.
Urna, the Sanskrit word for wool. Move across the shawl, or tap it, and the cloth answers.
01 — The wool
Pure wool, spun into yarn and woven on a handloom in the Kullu valley. The border is woven in, never printed: short lengths of coloured weft build each motif. The fringe is the warp itself, twisted by hand.
02 — Worn
Thrown over the shoulders, it falls in soft, heavy folds with the patterned ends in front. The bright geometric borders came to Kullu with weavers from Bushahr in the 1940s and became the valley's signature.
